The math, explained

How to Calculate a Test Grade Percentage

The formula for calculating a test grade percentage is straightforward. Divide the points earned by the total possible points and multiply by 100. When every question carries equal weight, you can calculate the percentage using the number of correct answers and total questions. In other words, your grade calculator percentage is the share of the total you got right, expressed out of 100.

If an answer earns partial credit, use the appropriate decimal score. Percentages in the examples below are rounded to two decimal places where necessary. A test score calculator applies the same formula, so the worked example below matches the result you get from the Easy Grader above.

Calculate the Number of Correct Answers

Subtract the number of wrong answers from the total number of questions. If you miss two questions on a 20-question test, you answered 18 correctly.

FormulaCorrect Answers = Total Questions − Wrong Answers

Use the Grade Percentage Formula

Once you know the number of correct answers, calculate the percentage grade.

FormulaPercentage Grade = (Correct Answers ÷ Total Questions) × 100

Worked Example: Calculate a Test Score

Suppose a student gets two questions wrong on a 20-question test.

  • Total questions: 20
  • Wrong answers: 2
  • Correct answers: 20 − 2 = 18
  • Percentage grade: (18 ÷ 20) × 100 = 90%

The student's test score is 90%. On the Easy Grader's US grading scale, that corresponds to an A−. The official letter grade depends on the grading scale used by the school or instructor, so check the course policy for the final result.

Beyond single tests

Average Grade Calculator: Weighted and Unweighted Grades

A single test score shows how you performed on one assessment. Your average grade, also called your overall grade or course grade, combines scores from homework, quizzes, midterms, projects, participation, and final exams.

How to Calculate a Weighted Average Grade

Many courses assign different weights to different assessments. For example, a syllabus might assign more importance to exams than homework.

To calculate a weighted average, multiply each score by its weight, add the weighted scores, and divide by the total weight.

For example, suppose your grades are 80 and 90 with a weight of 1 each, plus 70 with a weight of 2.

Worked example(80 × 1 + 90 × 1 + 70 × 2) ÷ (1 + 1 + 2) = 310 ÷ 4 = 77.5%

Weighted vs. Unweighted Average Grades

An unweighted average treats every grade equally. Add the grades together and divide by the number of grades. This method works when every assessment has the same importance.

A weighted average accounts for the different importance of each assignment or category. Use the method that matches your course grading policy.

Calculate an Average Grade Using Points

Prefer points instead of percentages? The Points mode uses total-points grading. Add all earned points and divide by the total possible points.

Suppose you earn 45, 38, and 52 points out of a possible 50, 40, and 60.

Total earned points: 45 + 38 + 52 = 135.

Total possible points: 50 + 40 + 60 = 150.

Percentage grade: (135 ÷ 150) × 100 = 90%.

Calculate an Average Using Letter Grades

The Letters mode reports results in grade points on a 4.0 scale. Weighted and unweighted GPA calculations use different approaches to course difficulty, but an official GPA can also depend on credit hours and institutional rules.

This site averages your grades rather than calculating an official GPA. For your own assignments, use the Average Grade Calculator page.

Before the big day

Final Exam Grade Calculator: What Score Do You Need?

Your current grade tells you where you stand, while your target grade shows where you want to finish. The Final Grade Calculator uses your current grade, desired grade, and final exam weight to calculate the score you need on the final.

Final Exam Grade Formula

FormulaNeeded Final Exam Grade = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Exam Weight)) ÷ Final Exam Weight

Use the final exam weight as a decimal in the formula. For example, 40% becomes 0.40.

Example: Calculate the Grade Needed on a Final

Suppose your current course average is 85%, your target grade is 90%, and your final exam is worth 40% of the course grade.

Worked example(90 − 85 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 97.5%

You would need 97.5% on the final exam to reach your target, assuming the current grade represents the completed portion of the course.

If the required score is over 100%, your target cannot be reached through the final exam alone. You could consider a more realistic target or ask your instructor about extra credit.

If you have other assignments remaining, account for them in your current grade before relying on the result. Visit the Final Grade Calculator page to try your own numbers.

Grade Percentage Chart: Understanding Letter Grades and Grading Scales

Free Grade Calculator and Eazy Grader Online for Test Scores

A percentage grade and a letter grade answer different questions. Your percentage measures what you earned numerically. A letter grade comes from the grade boundaries chosen by your school or instructor.

For example, the same 88% could be a B+ in one course and an A− in another because their grading scales differ.

The Easy Grader uses a fixed US-style A–F scale with plus and minus grades. It does not offer a customizable grading scale, so compare your result with your school's grading policy to determine your official letter grade.

Passing grades also vary by institution and course. Check your course requirements to understand what counts as a passing score.

A Brief History of Grading Systems

Schools have not always reported results in the same way. Numerical scores and percentage marks provide a direct measure of performance, while letter grades group results into broader achievement levels.

Grading policies still vary by school, course, and country. A calculator can provide a numerical percentage, but your institution's rules determine the official letter grade.

Questions, answered

Frequently Asked Questions About Easy Grader and Grade Calculators

What Is an Easy Grader?

An Easy Grader, sometimes called an EZ Grader, calculates a test score using the total number of questions and the number answered incorrectly. It can show the percentage grade, letter grade, and grading chart. Teachers use it to grade quizzes and exams, while students can use it to check their results.

How Do I Calculate a Test Percentage?

Subtract the number of wrong answers from the total to find the correct answers. Divide the correct answers by the total questions and multiply by 100.

For example, 18 correct answers out of 20 gives (18 ÷ 20) × 100 = 90%.

This formula assumes every question has equal weight. Tests with different point values require a points-based calculation.

How Do I Find the Number of Correct Answers?

Subtract the wrong answers from the total number of questions.

For example, if you miss three questions on a 25-question test, you answered 22 correctly.

25 − 3 = 22 correct answers.

Does a Percentage Grade Always Correspond to the Same Letter Grade?

No. The percentage is a numerical result, but the letter grade depends on the grading boundaries used by your school or instructor. This calculator uses a US A+ to F scale with plus and minus grades. Always check your own grading policy for the official letter grade.

Can I Use an Easy Grader for Quizzes and Exams?

Yes. You can use Easy Grader for quizzes, exams, homework checks, and practice tests when the score is based on counting correct and incorrect answers and each question carries equal weight.

What If Questions Have Different Point Values?

Use points rather than simply counting questions. Add the points earned, divide by the total possible points, and multiply by 100 to calculate the percentage.

The Average Grade Calculator's Points mode can help with total-points grading across assignments.

What Is the Difference Between a Test Score and a Course Grade?

A test score measures performance on one assessment. A course grade combines multiple assessments, such as assignments, quizzes, projects, and exams, often with different weights.

Use the Average Grade Calculator to combine grades and the Final Grade Calculator to work out the score you need on your final exam.

Whether you're a student checking an exam result, a teacher grading quizzes, or a parent helping with schoolwork, our free Grade Calculator makes grade calculations simple. Use the Easy Grader (EZ Grader) to calculate test scores, find your grade percentage, and check the grading chart in seconds. Need to combine homework, assignments, and exam results?
